Beating Temptation Part 1

10/26/2016

I have been working on this transformation/health/fitness column and sharing my insights to all things related every month. I feel like this is something everyone struggles with and wants help. Giving you my insight as an average person is what I think makes this work. This month, I want to talk about temptations, as I have had many of them lately and I know we all have them in our lives.

Temptations are all around us; we have to deal with them so much. Especially at this time of year when so many new great foods and drinks are being released, and it’s time to have fun and enjoy. They also say it’s the period that most people gain the most weight. I know I have in past and this year, I hope it will be the first time that I can conquer temptation and not do that to myself after all the hard work I have been putting in.

Sweets and other goodies

I have a major sweet-tooth so I have an issue with this temptation the most. I used to have the biggest addiction to soda, but since changing a few months ago, I don't drink it much anymore. I have tried to drink soda as a drink a few times recently, but it always left a funny taste in my mouth so I don't desire it much anymore.

But candy and pastries are the thing that kills me. Last week, it was my cheat day (cheat days are healthy and good for a person so we should always have them) and I was craving a donut. I love donuts so I went into the donut shop and ordered three different kinds of donuts. I got into my car and, while driving I ate one. After only a few bites, I felt sick. A few minutes later, knowing those other donuts were still in that bag, I couldn’t resist and took another one out to taste. After a few bites, the same thing. Then, about 20 minutes later, I took the third one out and started to eat it, only taking a few bites. This one seemed to be fine, but I couldn't eat it all. I realized I had been so good with changing my eating habits that bad foods were not making me feel good anymore.

What I learned from this is that it’s okay to have a bite or two of something to get the taste, but not to overdo it by forcing yourself to eat the whole thing if you can't. When I got home later, I opened the trash can outside and tossed the donuts in there. I was satisfied and haven't really craved a donut since. It’s okay to be tempted by bad food and it is okay to eat it, but also listen to your body. A few bites won't hurt you, and eventually, your body won't crave that stuff much anymore. Something key I have learned through this process.

Keep tuned in for my next temptations piece… and find out what other temptations we all have around us that aren't food!
